Frustration is boiling over in Lawley as residents endure a third consecutive day without running water. Taps across the area have been dry since around 5pm on Sunday, 9 February, and by Wednesday afternoon no supply had been restored.
The impact of the outage has now begun to affect local schools as well. Lawley Primary School sent out a communication to parents on Wednesday morning, informing them that the school would be closing early due to the ongoing water crisis.
Angry community members have taken to the Lawley Community Service WhatsApp group to voice their concerns. One resident said: “The water crisis has worsened here in Lawley, leaving many families struggling to cope with daily life. We urgently plead with Joburg Water to intervene and restore water supply to our community. Access to clean, running water is a basic necessity, and residents can no longer endure these ongoing disruptions.”
Another resident expressed how the prolonged outage is affecting basic routines. “We can’t take baths when we are going to work because of this water issue. How are we supposed to get ready in the mornings with no water at all?” said the resident.
A local resident added that the situation is now becoming a serious health concern. “It is not just an inconvenience anymore. People need water to cook, to clean and to stay healthy. Three days is too long for any community to be without such a basic service.”
Residents are now calling on Joburg Water to urgently communicate the cause of the outage and provide a clear timeline for when supply will be restored.
GLOBE POST has contacted Johannesburg Water for comment regarding the ongoing outage and is currently awaiting their response.
