South African Yatra celebrates landmark moment on Nityananda Trayodashi

On 31 January, devotees from Gauteng gathered at ISKCON Sri Sri Nitai Gaura Hari Temple in Lenasia, to witness a historic milestone for the South African Yatra. The occasion marked Nityananda Trayodashi, the auspicious appearance day of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, and became even more significant when Bhakti Narasingha Swami (BNS) formally took the oath of allegiance as an initiating spiritual master within ISKCON.

The ceremony carried deep symbolic importance. Standing before Sri Sri Nitai Gaur Hari – the first Deities installed in ISKCON South Africa – Bhakti Narasingha Swami became the first indigenous South African devotee to be officially authorized to give diksha, or spiritual initiation, within the country. While African-born gurus already serve in other parts of the world, this moment represented a first for South Africa itself and signaled the growing maturity of the movement locally.

ISKCON’s history in South Africa has long reflected a spirit of social transformation. During the apartheid era, when racial segregation dominated society, ISKCON temples served as rare spaces of unity.

Veteran devotee Kshudi Das recalled that he was once expelled from the country for what authorities considered a crime. “The crime we were doing was mixing people of different races,” he said.

According to Das these early struggles ultimately laid the foundation for today’s diverse and thriving community.

Govardhan Das, Chairman of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission and Co-GBC for Southern Africa said: “On this appearance day of Lord Nityananda, we are very happy to be part of this oath and allegiance ceremony, as required by ISKCON law. This is one of the most demanding services in ISKCON. Thank you for accepting it.”

Govardhan Das reminded devotees that serving the guru is a shared effort. “The more we serve, the more mercy we receive from Nityananda Prabhu and the guru-parampara,” he said.

Following the ceremony, Bhakti Narasingha Swami will travel to Mayapur to complete final training requirements before officially commencing his new service.
