A transformative initiative is taking place in the Shaziel community as Living Word Kingswood School partners with local leader Sunita Doman and Ward 102’s Cllr Puseletso Nzimande to convert an used space into a vibrant, safe, and inclusive green hub.

Sunita Doman, told GLOBE POST: “The Shaziel community is a vibrant and resilient community located in Lenasia South Ext 4, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. It’s bounded by Mount Shasta and Mount Ziel Place.”

The project began with Doman’s visionary idea to tackle ongoing challenges in the area, including crime, encroachment and the lack of accessible recreational spaces.

In addition, Doman submitted a detailed proposal for a multi-purpose community park. “The motive is to create a safe and inclusive green space for the Shaziel community, addressing issues like encroachment and crime, while promoting community engagement and upliftment,” she said.

Living Word Kingswood School, deputy principal, Waseem Khan, expressed his excitement about the partnership, noting that the project reflects the school’s commitment to community service and environmental development. He emphasised that the initiative will not only uplift Shaziel but also provide meaningful service-learning opportunities for learners.

“The proposal was presented during the Community-Based Planning (CBP) session on 3 November, and shortly afterwards, City Parks conducted an on-site inspection, signalling strong institutional support,” Doman shared. Khan facilitated a meeting between the Cllr and Doman to discuss concerns such as persistent vandalism of streetlights. Impressed by Doman’s passion and commitment, Cllr Nzimande encouraged her to formalise her ideas.

“Despite the positive momentum, the project faces challenges such as securing funding, managing community expectations, and ensuring inclusive decision-making,” said Sunita.

Doman added that the initiative will enhance the quality of life for residents and strengthen community connections.
The project is expected to be finalised within the next 8-12 months, pending funding and necessary approvals.

Living Word Kingswood School, along with its partners, is calling on the community to participate actively in shaping this shared vision. “We invite all community members to join us in this journey and contribute to shaping a greener, safer, and more connected Shaziel,” Khan concluded.
