According to the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali (Lakshmi Pooja) will both be observed on Monday, 20 October 2025.
Dhanteras -18 October 2025
The Diwali season begins with Dhanteras on Saturday, 18 October. On this day, it’s customary to clean homes and purchase metal items, especially gold and silver, to bring prosperity.
Narak Chaturdashi & Abhyang Snaan – 20 October 2025
The key ritual of Narak Chaturdashi is the Abhyang Snaan, a special bath performed with Ayurvedic oils such as sesame (thill) oil. This sacred bath, to be done after moonrise and before sunrise, is believed to purify the body and mind and free one from the sufferings of “Narak” (hellish states).
Diwali (Lakshmi Pooja) – 20 October 2025
In the evening, devotees will celebrate Diwali and perform Lakshmi Pooja, invoking blessings of prosperity and light. Traditionally, one diya (lamp) is lit in each room of the home, and one diya is placed under the Tulsi plant, symbolizing purity and devotion.
Though Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali fall on the same Gregorian date this year, the Hindu Panchang (calendar) determines observances based on five precise astrological factors – not just the date – ensuring all rituals are aligned with auspicious timings. May this Diwali bring light, peace, and good health to all.
