A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was sentenced to six years imprisonment for three counts of culpable homicide by the Lenasia Magistrate Court.
It is alledged that in June 2018, Raymond Nkosinathi Mzizi was driving a state vehicle on Golden Highway, at around 18h00, when he collided with a Toyota Corolla and a Siyaya minibus taxi. There were five occupants in the Toyota Corolla, a father, his three daughters and a grandchild. Two daughters and a grandchild died at the scene while the father and one daughter were transported to Baragwanath Hospital for medical treatment.
Mzizi was arrested at the scene and charged for culpable homicide, drunken driving and driving state vehicle without authorisation. The investigations were finalised in 2019, and the case was placed on the court roll for trial at the Protea Magistrates Court.
Mzizi was found guilty on three counts of culpable homicide and sentenced to six years. He was further sentenced to 12 months for driving a state vehicle without authorisation. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently. He was acquitted on a charge of drunken driving.
