On 3 July, Fred Norman Secondary School hosted an engaging environmental awareness play as part of the Lisakhanya programme, reaching 50 Grade 8 and 9 learners directly at their own venue instead of the usual trip to Joburg Theatre.

The initiative was made possible through a collaboration between the City of Johannesburg’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) via its Education and Awareness unit and Joburg Theatre. This partnership aims to promote vital themes such as climate change, biodiversity, water conservation, and waste management among young learners.

The performance, which took place at Daleview Secondary School, forms part of the EISD’s ongoing efforts to make environmental education accessible and relevant. By bringing the theatre to the school during the holidays, the programme highlighted how daily choices impact the environment and future generations.

Chairperson of I AM THAT MAN, Melvyn Petersen and Priscilla Colledge, secretary of the C2-QLTC (Quality Learning Teaching Campaign) Steering Executive Committee, played key roles in ensuring the event’s success, alongside dedicated educators from Fred Norman Secondary, the COJ Environmental Team’s Hlobisile Thwala and Nosipho Ngema of Environmental Awareness Strategic Integration.

The play supported curriculum goals in subjects like Natural Science, Geography, History and Life Orientation, aiming to empower learners and encourage them to care for their surroundings. Mr Petersen and Ms Colledge extended their gratitude to all stakeholders, especially Joburg Theatre and the City of Johannesburg, for their commitment to educating the next generation about protecting the planet.
