City Power officially launched its meter audit and normalisation programme in Lenasia and Zakariya Park – a bold move to improve service delivery, modernise infrastructure, and promote fair electricity billing.
The audit began a day earlier, on 23 June, and will target 1 140 households. The goal: inspect meters, fix faults, and normalise connections especially for residents who’ve never vended or may have tampered devices. Those who block access or tamper with meters risk disconnection and steep fines of over R14 000 for single-phase and R30 000 for three-phase connections.“No Access” notices will be left for unavailable homes, with contact details to arrange follow-ups.
Technicians will carry official City Power ID cards featuring photos, expiry dates, badge numbers, a firefly hologram and emergency contact numbers for verification on 011 490 7900 / 7911 / 7553 or WhatsApp 083 579 4497. This initiative also supports the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme, offering 50kWh monthly to registered indigent households.
To qualify, residents must have a working meter. Registration is available at City Power SDCs, local municipal offices, SASSA pay-points, taxi ranks, malls and through door-to-door campaigns.
The audit is being rolled out in phases, with more areas to follow. Communities will be notified by councillors and outreach teams. City Power urges full cooperation.
