The Lenasia South Shotokan Karate Academy (LSSKA) hosted its annual karate tournament on Saturday, 24 May at the Lenasia South Civic Centre. The tournament returned after a long break, following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Over the past five years, the club faced many challenges, but thanks to the dedication of chief instructor Sensei Ashok Chotoo, it was rebuilt to its former glory. The event was a great success, with dojos from across Gauteng participating. Shihan Mohn Hira attended as a guest and the event also commemorated Africa Day (25 May).
Participants, including students from Lenasia South, showcased their skills in both Kata and Kumite. Many walked away with medals for their efforts. Sensei Ashok expressed pride in the commitment shown by the karatekas and thanked parents for their continued support and encouragement in the lead-up to the tournament.
Lenasia South’s Shotokan Karate Academy was established in 1990 to promote the art of karate in the area, encouraging self-discipline, self-defence and confidence, among other benefits.Sensei Ashok Chotoo, a 5th Dan ISKF-accredited instructor, is supported by Leon Chotoo, a 4th Dan and also an accredited ISKF instructor.
In recent years, the academy has focused on the theme “DO KARATE. NOT DRUGS!” – using karate as a positive alternative to drugs and bullying, while preserving traditional Shotokan values and discipline. Karate offers numerous benefits, such as: Strengthening the mind, boosting focus and awareness and building confidence.
Enhancing physical abilities through improved coordination, quicker reflexes, stamina and overall health. Equipping students with self-defence skills. Parents are encouraged to involve their children in the sport for both its mental and physical advantages.
