DA calls for urgent action against rising crime in Region G

The Democratic Alliance (DA) expresses deep concern over the alarming surge in crime that has left residents of Region G living in fear.

Over the past few months, the community has faced an unsettling increase in violent crime, including service delivery protests that have turned violent and tragic incidents involving mass shootings resulting in multiple fatalities. Recent statistics and reports paint a grim picture of safety in the area.

In December 2024 alone, three people were murdered in Water Wax, a taxi boss was shot dead in broad daylight in Ennerdale and over the weekend, four individuals lost their lives in Vlakfontein. Just today, another four were killed in Lenasia South. These incidents are a stark reminder of the escalating violence that residents must contend with daily.

The DA has been actively advocating for increased policing and safety measures within the Gauteng Legislature. The DA shared: “We have submitted a memorandum to the Premier of Gauteng, requesting urgent action to bolster by-law enforcement and enhance visible and active policing. This memorandum, which was accepted by a representative of the Premier’s Office, has yet to result in meaningful action from the Premier or the MEC of Community Safety in Gauteng.”

It is evident that those in positions of power have not taken the safety of communities seriously. The DA questions: How many more lives must be lost before effective measures are implemented to protect the vulnerable members of our society?

“We urge the Premier of Gauteng and the MEC of Community Safety to prioritize the safety of residents in Region G. Immediate steps must be taken to ensure that law enforcement agencies are adequately resourced and that community safety is restored,” said the DA.

The DA remains committed to advocating for the rights of all citizens to live in a safe and secure environment.

“We call upon all residents of Region G to join us in demanding accountability from our leaders. Together, we can amplify our voices and push for the necessary changes that will lead to a safer community for everyone.”
