In the early hours of last night, thieves broke into a shopping centre in Phumlamqashi, causing extensive damage and looting the local supermarket while attempts to infiltrate other areas of the complex which include the butchery and liquor store were hindered by enhanced security measures.

According to Naveen from Viper Security, the liquor store’s gated barriers prevented the suspects from gaining access to alcohol, while reinforced locks thwarted their efforts to breach the butchery.

Early this morning, residents gathered at the scene expressing heartbreak over the incident. Elderly members of the community, visibly upset, spoke fondly of the centre’s owner and how he has been a consistent supporter and sponsor of local initiatives.

“He’s always helping out, whether it’s with food drives or school supplies. It’s painful to see this happen to someone who does so much for all of us,” shared one resident.

In the past days, there has been unrest in Phumlamqashi following water disconnections in the informal settlement where residents connected themselves illegally onto the water network. There are ongoing protests where disgruntled residents are calling on authorities to reconnect them. Last night, some parts of the Golden Highway were blocked by protesters as well. There are speculations that the criminals took advantage of the unrest and looted the store.
