On Friday 10 May, RISE Mzansi presented a memorandum of demands to the City of Johannesburg, Rand Water and the Johannesburg Water Agency as well as the Department of Water and Sanitation, in Lenasia South.

The Memorandum was handed over by National Chairperson and Gauteng Premier Candidate, Vuyiswa Ramakgopa and National Leadership Collective member, Irfaan Mangera. The fast- growing new political party marched with the community against water shortages and to demand that the R45-million reservoir provide the water as was promised when it was launched over two years ago.

The march coincided with the release of RISE Mzansi’s ‘Water and Sanitation Crisis Plan’ which provides a realistic plan to not only address the short-term water and sanitation crisis, but outline how to reform our food and water systems to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

It is imperative for effective coordination between local and national levels of government, as well as water authorities, to ensure that the outages are not treated in isolation.

The community of Lenasia South have been experiencing water cuts daily for over 5 years and only new leaders will address the record of poor governance experienced so far. RISE Mzansi leaders also called for those who are corrupt to be held accountable.
