In its ongoing efforts to ensure greater food security, Shoprite distributed garden-in-a-bucket kits to families living in the vicinity of Ennerdale’s Winnie Mabaso Foundation in Gauteng.

The recent distribution targeting 300 families also covered communities in North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, and Western Cape provinces.

The retailer’s Grow Your Own project provides community members, who live near Shoprite-supported food gardens, with garden kits as well as the necessary training and tools required to grow their own food gardens at home.

Each kit contains enough seedlings, seeds and fertiliser to grow sufficient fresh produce for a family of four for at least a year.

To date Shoprite has distributed more than 4 000 kits to communities across South Africa, benefitting over 16 000 people.

Sanjeev Raghubir, Head of Sustainability and CSI at the Shoprite Group said: “We are committed to building the resilience of the communities in which we trade. Food gardens ensure vulnerable communities are more adaptive, so it is one of the many initiatives we have in place to help address food security across South Africa.”

Hunger relief and food security are at the core of the Group’s Act For Change programme through which the retailer supports more than 230 food gardens – covering over 4.5 million m2 – indirectly impacting 61 064 beneficiaries.
