The Johannesburg District Commissioner, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, applauded the police and other law enforcement agencies in the Joburg District for turning the tide against crime by arresting over 320 suspects from 7 May to 8 May during a multidisciplinary Operation Shanela.

On 8 May, the operation which included other law enforcement agencies was held across Lenasia and Lenasia South policing precinct where about 47 suspects were arrested for various offences including possession of drugs, extortion, malicious damage to property, assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm, drinking alcohol in public, common assault, contravention of the Immigration Act and selling liquor without a license.

Police also confiscated 01 airgun, a replica firearm, 08 mandrax tablets with the street value of R400 00,2500 kg of aluminium cable, 05 top meter boxes and dagga with the street value of R1500 00. A Honda balade sedan with its Vin number tampered with was also confiscated.

The aim of the operation was to maximise police visibility, reduce crime by targeting crime hotspots across the two policing precincts and to support them in their efforts to combat crime and maintain law and order. In an earlier operation led by the detectives across the district, suspects were also traced, resulting in the arrest of 278 wanted for serious and violent crimes, including gender-based violence.

The suspects will appear at the local magistrate court soon.
