On Sunday, 21 May, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Ward 7 were joined by the City of Joburg’s MMC of Health and Social Development, Ennie Makhafola as they conducted an Andries Tatane Clean-up Campaign in Meriting informal settlement.

The red berets showed up in their numbers and cleaned and cleared up an illegal dumping site as part of the party’s clean-up campaigns targeting such sites in townships and informal settlements.

EFF Ward 7’s councillor candidate, Thabiso Thuputlela said: “ I have lived in this Ward for 31 years and the conditions of our people have not changed. The last time Meriting was cleaned was in 2017 and that area in particular and others were reported to Pikitup and Ward leaders months ago and nothing was done. The clean-up campaign will continue weekly in honour of Andries Tatane who was killed for service delivery- fighting for cleanliness, we are also doing the same thing for our people hence we were also in Ennerdale Ext 5 last week.”

Meriting residents were grateful to the EFF as the site posed as a health hazard and provided cover for criminals.

Thuputlela will contest the Ward 7 by-elections on 28 June, he said: ”I am a young person with futuristic ideas for the incoming generation, I will not allow them to suffer the same way I did – something ought to change in our ward, it must not be a generational curse. We demand economic freedom in our lifetime. If elected, my number one priority will be efficient and effective service delivery with permanent solutions.“
