The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has issued a strong appeal to residents and road users to exercise caution as persistent and disruptive rains are forecasted over the coming days.

In a statement, the department highlighted warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) about the risks of localized flooding, potential damage to road infrastructure and hazards at low-lying bridges.

Residents are advised to avoid crossing flooded areas and to remain vigilant at all times. MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, emphasized the need for caution among motorists, bikers and pedestrians to prevent injuries and fatalities.

She urged road users to adhere to speed limits, maintain vehicle roadworthiness and stay alert, especially in rainy conditions.“Exercise extra vigilance and care during these conditions to safeguard lives,” the MEC stated.

As part of precautionary measures, the department has activated emergency road maintenance teams to monitor developments and collaborate with disaster management services in case of excessive flooding or damage to provincial and municipal roads.

The department calls on all stakeholders and road users to work together by practicing safe habits, ensuring safer roads for everyone during this period of disruptive weather.
