Water storage levels across Gauteng have sharply declined due to excessive withdrawals by municipalities, sparking significant concerns.
Rand Water has repeatedly warned municipalities about the potential crisis, sending official letters, conducting meetings and participating in discussions at Gauteng’s Intergovernmental Governance Forum and the Gauteng Water Imbizo.
Despite these efforts, the anticipated crisis has now materialized. Gauteng’s water supply systems, including Rand Water reservoirs, are at critically low levels, with the situation expected to worsen due to the ongoing heatwave.
Rand Water urges communities, especially in Gauteng, to prepare for potential water shortages if municipalities do not act on recommended measures. It is crucial to implement water-saving practices to mitigate this crisis and avoid severe water disruptions.
