Three males, aged between 35 and 42, who are suspected to be part of a vehicle theft syndicate were arrested in Roodepoort on Tuesday, 3 Septembe, by a team comprising of members from South African Police Service and Private Security Companies.

Information was received through crime intelligence about a group of suspects who are involved in theft of motor vehicles around Gauteng Province. It was revealed that the suspects are utilising Audi A3 sedan and are targeting high-end value vehicles and SUVs.

Law enforcement officers, consisting of SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Office, SAPS Gauteng Tactical Response Team, SAPS Honeydew, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect operationalised the information and went out searching for the suspects. The suspects’ vehicle, affixed with false registration plates, with three occupants, was spotted driving in Little Falls, Roodepoort.

The team intercepted the suspects, and upon searching the vehicle and suspects, the team found two military grade jammers, electronic devices that are used to commit theft of motor vehicles and multiple false registration plates. The suspects were linked to various cases of theft of motor vehicles around Gauteng.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the team for a job well done and believes that the arrest of the suspects will help in minimising cases of theft of motor vehicles in Gauteng. An Audi A3 sedan utilised by the suspects was seized, and three suspects were arrested. They are expected to appear before Roodepoort Magistrates Court in due course.
