Residents of Finetown are set to benefit from improved road infrastructure as the City of Johannesburg advances its Finetown Road Upgrade Project, an initiative aimed at improving mobility, road safety and access within the community.

Managed by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the project forms part of the City’s broader infrastructure development efforts across Region G, with approximately 1.07km of existing gravel roads earmarked for upgrading to durable asphalt surfaces.

The improvements will cover Road D, Simmonds Street and Wilson Street, replacing gravel surfaces that can become dusty during dry weather and muddy during rainy conditions with smoother, more reliable roads. Beyond improving the condition of the roads, the project also seeks to create safer and more accessible public spaces for residents and other road users.

Planned infrastructure improvements include the construction of formal pedestrian walkways, allowing pedestrians to move more safely, as well as the installation of stormwater infrastructure designed to manage water runoff and minimise erosion.

The development is expected to make everyday movement more convenient while contributing towards a more resilient road network in the area. Importantly, the project also carries an economic empowerment component, with 11 local small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) being supported through the JDA’s Economic Empowerment Programme.

The initiative is also creating employment opportunities for local labourers, ensuring that the development contributes not only to physical infrastructure but also to economic participation within the community. The Finetown Road Upgrade Project highlights the importance of investing in neighbourhood infrastructure, particularly in communities where improved roads, pedestrian facilities and effective stormwater management can make a meaningful difference to residents’ daily lives.

Through initiatives such as this, the City continues its efforts to build more accessible, safer and inclusive communities across Johannesburg. For Finetown residents, the upgrade represents a positive step towards better roads, improved connectivity and greater local economic opportunities.
