A 38-year-old man who was allegedly kidnapped in the Johannesburg CBD has been rescued unharmed after spending 36 days in captivity, with five suspects arrested in connection with the case. The man was allegedly abducted on 30 August, after which his family received a demand for a US$2 million ransom.
Police launched an intelligence-driven investigation involving Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Team, the Flying Squad and private security companies to locate the man and identify those responsible. A breakthrough came on Sunday, 4 October, when three men were arrested. Police said the suspects were allegedly found with the cellphone believed to have been used to contact the victim’s family and demand the ransom.
Further investigations led the team to a property in Randfontein, where the victim was found and safely rescued. Two more suspects were arrested at the property, bringing the total number of arrests to five. All five suspects are expected to face charges of kidnapping and extortion.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the victim or suspects, and it has not been confirmed whether any ransom was paid. The investigation is continuing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the abduction and the alleged roles of those arrested.
The rescue comes as kidnapping and extortion remain a serious concern in Gauteng, with police and private security teams continuing to work together on cases involving ransom demands.
