The spirit of giving came alive in Lenasia South as 3G’s successfully concluded its Can Drive, collecting hundreds of tins of food for families facing difficult socio-economic circumstances. Held at the NTN Centre on 22 and 29 August 2026, the initiative brought residents together around a simple goal — contributing what they could to assist households struggling to put food on the table.
Driven by the message “Bring a can, if you can,” the campaign encouraged people to donate tins of food, regardless of the size of their contribution. What started as a straightforward appeal grew into a strong community effort, with residents, relatives and friends responding generously and helping the organisation exceed expectations.
By the end of the campaign, 329 cans of food had been collected. Of these, 157 were donated directly at the NTN Centre, while a further 172 came through 3G’s network of family and friends. The collected items will be distributed to families in need across Lenasia South, providing some relief to households experiencing financial hardship.
For 3G’s, the success of the campaign was about more than reaching a numerical target. Each tin represented someone choosing to share what they had with another person, showing how relatively small contributions can collectively have a much greater impact. The organisation believes initiatives of this nature can also strengthen community ties and encourage a culture of caring for those facing challenging circumstances.
Founder Vasie Pillay thanked everyone who contributed and said the response reflected the generosity that exists within the community. “We are truly grateful to every person who supported the Can Drive. Whether someone donated one can or several, every contribution mattered. When people come together with a common purpose, small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” Pillay said.
Special appreciation was also extended to 3G’s members Marshnee Kumari Govender, Neville Teeka, Shireen Sewburran, Seelan Govender and Yogeshnie Govender, as well as Naseem and his family. They volunteered their time at the NTN Centre, interacted with donors and helped ensure the collection days ran smoothly, demonstrating the commitment that continues to drive the organisation’s work.
With the collection phase complete, attention will now shift towards distributing the donated food to those who need it most. For the receiving families, the contribution will not only help stock their cupboards but also carry a message that their struggles have not gone unnoticed by the people around them.
The campaign has once again demonstrated what can be achieved when individuals work together for a shared purpose. 3G’s thanked everyone who donated, volunteered or helped spread the word and hopes the response will encourage even more people to participate in future efforts aimed at making a difference in Lenasia South.
