The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a manhunt for a 41-year-old man wanted in connection with the killing of three people in Moeka Vuma, near Makapanstad in the North West.

Police have identified the suspect as James Mohajane, who is wanted in connection with the murders of his girlfriend, Moipone Lefoka, her sister Esther Lefoka, and Esther’s boyfriend, Tshepo Molekwa. The search comes as police intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), as well as serious and violent crimes against women, children and vulnerable groups during Women’s Month.

According to SAPS, the three victims were last seen together at a house belonging to Molekwa. On Sunday morning, their bodies were discovered inside the property. Police allege that they had been attacked and killed with a spade. When officers arrived at the scene, Mohajane was nowhere to be found. His cellphone was, however, reportedly discovered at the crime scene, and police have since launched an intensive search to establish his whereabouts. The motive behind the killings has not yet been established and remains part of the ongoing police investigation.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to violent crimes committed against women during Women’s Month, a period in which SAPS has placed additional focus on preventing and combating GBVF. Police have stressed that crimes against women and other vulnerable members of society remain a priority and that perpetrators of serious violent offences will continue to be pursued.

As the investigation continues, SAPS is calling on communities in Moeka Vuma, Makapanstad and surrounding areas to assist detectives with any information that could help locate Mohajane. Members of the public have also been strongly cautioned against attempting to apprehend or confront the wanted man themselves. “Members of the public are urged not to approach or confront the suspect, but to immediately provide information to the police,” SAPS said.

Police are particularly appealing to anyone who may have seen Mohajane following the discovery of the three victims or who may have information about his current whereabouts to come forward. Even information that may appear insignificant could assist investigators in tracing him and advancing the murder investigation.

SAPS further reiterated that its efforts to address gender-based violence will continue beyond awareness campaigns, with law-enforcement operations and investigations forming part of the broader response to crimes targeting women, children and vulnerable groups.

“The SAPS reiterates its commitment to intensifying efforts to prevent and combat GBVF and violent crime, particularly crimes targeting women and vulnerable groups,” police said.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Lefoka, her sister and Molekwa continues, while police work to establish the motive and trace the wanted suspect.
