On Wednesday, 29 November, the Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) organised a service delivery blitz in partnership with Lenasia South SAPS, CPF, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, FAMSA, LifeLine, SASSA, Home Affairs, and Thuthuzela Care Centre at Phumlamqashi Informal Settlement.

The primary objective of the event was to facilitate easier access to the services offered by Home Affairs, SASSA, and SAPS for the local community. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness about the array of services provided by the DSD. During the event, residents received education on issues such as child neglect, drugs and substance abuse and more. Many took advantage of the opportunity to apply for birth certificates, Smart Card IDs, and SASSA grants. The Lenasia South SAPS’ mobile truck was also present to assist in certifying documents and affidavits.

Social worker, Dumisile Ntshalintshali, from DSD told GLOBE POST: “Phumlamqashi lacks essential services like Home Affairs or SASSA. Therefore, we organised a service blitz where various departments shared information about their services and offered assistance, aligning with the goals of social development.”

The residents of Phumlaqhashi expressed enthusiasm about this initiative. Atlehang Rampai commented: “This event is incredibly helpful, especially for those unable to visit home affairs to apply for IDs for their children due to financial constraints or a lack of necessary information. This event arrived at the opportune moment and will greatly benefit many people.”

The event received significant participation from the Phumlamqashi community and was deemed successful. Many residents were aided and educated on the functioning of various DSD departments.
