Lenasia South parents looking to enrol their children for Grade 8 at Lenasia South Secondary (LSS) have expressed outrage at the school which they allege demands a payment of R1 500 before learners could be registered.

Earlier today, concerned parents and residents gathered at the school gates questioning why a public school would request payment.

Speaking to GLOBE POST, Lungile Masondo, said she was shocked by the school’s actions: “How can a public school demand school fees and say our children must not enter the school premises if the fees are not paid? LSS is a no-fee public school. I really don’t understand how they operate.”

Masondo further claimed that a teacher informed parents that Grade 8 learners are required to pay R1 500 before registration can take place.

Masondo added: “We do not work, does that mean my child must stay at home and not receive an education?”

Another resident raised similar concerns, stating that parents were told that their children will only receive stationery lists and be allocated to classes once the payment had been made.

Parents are calling for clarity and intervention, saying the alleged demands contradict the principles of public education and place an unfair burden on unemployed and low – income families.

This is a developing story, GLOBE POST has contacted the Gauteng Department of Education for comment, story will be updated once we receive feedback.
