In late September, the City of Johannesburg’s Environmental Health and Economic Development departments held a session at Don Mateman in Eldorado Park to support spaza shop owners in Wards 17 and 18.
The event highlighted regulatory requirements and opportunities to access government funding, including the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund, which provides financial and non-financial assistance to township shop owners.
Speakers included Dr. Benji from the Department of Economic Development, and ward inspectors Joseph Ramoolla and Isaac Sehlapelo, who shared guidance on compliance, safety and business growth.
Attendance was moderate, showing a need for ongoing engagement. By learning how to meet regulations and access support, local spaza shop owners can strengthen their businesses and contribute to community economic growth.
