Lenmed’s Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital is celebrating a major milestone as its Metabolic and Weight Management Centre successfully completed its 100th bariatric surgery this month. The achievement comes just two years after the Centre’s launch in June 2023, reflecting the growing demand for advanced obesity management in South Africa.

Bariatric surgery – commonly known as weight loss surgery – is increasingly recognized as a life-changing intervention for individuals living with obesity and related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. While not a quick fix, it is a proven medical procedure that, when paired with lifestyle changes, supports sustainable weight loss and improves quality of life.

The landmark 100th procedure was performed by Dr Muhammad Khalil, a leading metabolic and bariatric surgeon, supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. “Bariatric surgery is not a quick solution – it is a catalyst for change,” said Dr Khalil. “Patients who commit to healthier habits after surgery are far more likely to achieve long-term success. At our Centre, we empower patients with the tools, guidance, and support to transform their health and lives.”

The Centre follows a holistic care model, involving surgeons, dietitians, psychologists, and other specialists. This approach ensures thorough pre-surgical evaluations, personalized treatment, and ongoing post-surgery support.

Since opening its doors, the Centre has seen rapid growth in demand, reflecting both the rising prevalence of obesity and increased awareness of bariatric surgery’s benefits. Patients often report not only significant weight loss but also improved energy, mobility, and reduced risk of serious health conditions.

“This milestone underscores the Centre’s commitment to excellence and patient-centred care,” said Abdool Amod, CEO of Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital. “We are proud to lead in addressing obesity – one of South Africa’s biggest health challenges – by offering safe, effective, and life-changing solutions.”

While surgery carries risks, Lenmed’s patient-focused approach ensures every individual is fully informed, carefully evaluated, and supported at every stage. Many patients have already experienced lasting results that extend well beyond weight loss, enhancing overall wellbeing and life expectancy.

Looking ahead, the Centre remains committed to cutting-edge treatments, empowering patients to take control of their health, and continuing its mission to fight obesity across South Africa.

Lenmed currently owns and manages 20 healthcare facilities across South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, and Mozambique, with offices in South Africa and Dubai.
