Johannesburg delays opening of public swimming pools to October

The City of Johannesburg has announced that the opening of its public swimming pools for the 2026/2027 swimming season has been postponed by a month. The municipal pools were initially scheduled to open on 1 September 2026, but residents will now have to wait until 1 October 2026 for the official start of the season.

The City said the delay is necessary to give officials additional time to address outstanding maintenance, compliance and operational requirements across municipal swimming facilities. While the postponement may disappoint residents who were looking forward to making use of the pools as temperatures rise, the City says the decision has been taken with public health and safety as its priority.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Councillor Thapelo Amad, apologised to residents for the delayed opening and acknowledged the inconvenience it may cause, particularly for regular pool users and communities that rely on municipal facilities for affordable recreation during the warmer months. “The City sincerely apologises for this delay and any inconvenience it may cause to regular pool users and communities. This extension is necessary to ensure that all municipal swimming facilities meet the strict health, safety, and operational standards required to provide a safe environment for the public,” said Amad.

Phased reopening planned

Rather than reopening all municipal swimming pools at once, the City has adopted a phased approach for the new season. A total of 36 swimming pools are expected to reopen during October 2026, with the rollout taking into account the different conditions and operational requirements of facilities across the City’s regions.

The phased approach is intended to allow the City to focus on ensuring that each facility is ready for public use before it reopens. This includes addressing outstanding maintenance work and ensuring that the necessary health, safety and operational requirements are in place. The City says the condition of its swimming facilities varies from one area to another, making a phased reopening a more practical approach than attempting to open every pool simultaneously. Residents are therefore encouraged to take note of announcements from the City regarding the reopening of individual facilities in their communities.

The delayed opening comes at a time when municipal swimming pools remain an important recreational resource for many Johannesburg residents. Public pools provide relatively affordable access to swimming and recreation, particularly for families and young people who may not have access to private swimming facilities.

According to Amad, the City’s swimming pools play an important role beyond simply providing a place for residents to cool off during summer. They also contribute to healthier lifestyles and provide safe spaces where children, young people and communities can spend time and participate in recreational activities. “The City recognises the important role municipal swimming pools play in providing affordable recreation, promoting active and healthy lifestyles, and creating safe recreational spaces for children, young people and communities during the warmer months,” said Amad.

Season could be extended into April

In an effort to make up for some of the time lost as a result of the delayed opening, the City is also considering extending the 2026/2027 swimming season into April 2027. Any extension would, however, depend on weather conditions as well as the City’s operational capacity at the time. If implemented, the proposed extension would give residents additional opportunities to make use of municipal swimming facilities and could help partially offset the impact of the one-month delay at the beginning of the season.

The City is expected to use the coming month to continue working through outstanding compliance and maintenance issues at its facilities. Officials say the focus will be on ensuring that pools are safe, properly maintained and ready to accommodate members of the public when they reopen.

“The City is actively working to resolve outstanding compliance and maintenance tasks over the next month. We thank our residents for their patience and understanding as we work to ensure our recreational spaces are safe for everyone this summer,” Amad said. For residents who regularly use municipal swimming pools, the postponement means that the start of the season will look different from what was originally planned. However, the City maintains that the additional preparation period is necessary to ensure that facilities are suitable for public use and that residents can enjoy the swimming season in a safe environment.

The public swimming season is now scheduled to begin on 1 October 2026, with 36 pools expected to reopen during October as part of the City’s phased approach. The City may also extend the season into April 2027, subject to weather and operational considerations.
