Two 12-year-old girls from Mid-Ennerdale Primary, are proving that determination can create opportunities, after their commitment to the Air Cadets programme inspired more young people in their community to get involved.
Riley Singh and Christen Oliphant joined the Air Cadets at the beginning of the year, attending classes held in Eldorado Park despite being the only two participants from Ennerdale. With no children from Eldorado Park joining at the time, the pair continued attending every session and remained committed to the programme.
Their dedication did not stop there. After experiencing the benefits of the initiative, the girls returned to their own community and encouraged other young people to join. Their efforts resulted in seven more children, aged between nine and 18, becoming part of the programme, with the duo now hoping to recruit even more members.
The Air Cadets programme provides young people with exposure to aviation while developing important life skills such as discipline, teamwork and commitment. Members receive both theoretical and tactical training at a monthly cost of R250.
Claire Bester, Training and Standards Manager, said the girls’ journey reflects the impact that determination and community involvement can have on young people.
“Riley and Christen did not wait for an opportunity to come to them. They took the initiative and created an opportunity for other children in their community. Their courage and commitment are truly inspiring,” said Bester.
She added that the programme offers young people a positive environment where they can develop skills and stay focused, especially in areas where youth activities and opportunities remain limited.
The Air Cadets are appealing to more children from Ennerdale and surrounding areas to join the programme. They are also calling on sponsors to assist young people from underprivileged backgrounds who may not be able to afford the monthly fees.
