The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Community Outreach Team engaged taxi drivers, commuters and informal traders at the Lenasia Taxi Rank on Sunday, 2 August, as part of an awareness campaign focused on road safety, crime prevention and compliance with municipal by-laws.

During the outreach, officers provided information on traffic regulations, public safety and the responsibilities of businesses operating within the City of Johannesburg.

“Together, we build safer roads and stronger communities,” JMPD said following the engagement.

Taxi drivers raised questions about the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences process, commonly known as AARTO, and requested that fine-checking devices be made available during the team’s next visit. The devices would allow motorists to check the status of outstanding traffic fines and infringement notices.

Street vendors were also advised on local business by-laws, including regulations governing informal trading and the use of public spaces.

The engagement formed part of JMPD’s broader community outreach programme, which aims to improve communication between law-enforcement officials and residents while encouraging compliance with road and municipal regulations.

JMPD said the positive interaction highlighted the importance of taking safety and compliance information directly to communities.

The department is expected to continue conducting similar outreach initiatives across Johannesburg.
