Operation Shanela 2: 370 arrested and unlicensed firearms seized in Lenasia and Eldorado Park

The police in Johannesburg District continued to root out contributors of crime by arresting over 370 suspects and recovering 2 unlicensed firearms during operations that were conducted across the district from 7 to 9 November.

In an effort to help and support the local police stations to combat crime, the District conducted multidisciplinary operation Shanela 2 and safer festive season across Eldorado Park and Lenasia policing precincts. The Operation resulted in 66 suspects being arrested for various crimes ranging from possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, murder, business breaking, possession of drugs, possession of suspected stolen property, robbery, assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm, dealing in liquor without license, and illegal immigrants.

In Eldorado Park, the police recovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol and 19 live rounds . During the operation, which was held in Lenasia, another 9mm pistol was also recovered. The other 155 suspects were arrested during high density, crime prevention , station commander’s operations, and adhock roadblocks, which were conducted around different stations across the district.

The detectives also traced and arrested 222 suspects during operations conducted across the district.

The Johannesburg District Commissioner Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka applauded the members and other law enforcement agencies for their hard work and commitment in an effort to combat crime across the district especially the removal of unlicensed firearms from our communities which contribute to violent crimes in our distinct.
