Power outages in Hospital Hills and Vlakfontein to last until Thursday as City Power seeks solutions

City Power is currently working on alternative plans to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible to residents in parts of Hospital Hills and Vlakfontein who are facing power outages after a transformer failed during testing on Saturday at the Lotus Substation.

The incident highlights a recent rise in failing transformers and mini-substations which City Power attributes to a combination of factors, including network overload caused by theft and vandalism of electrical equipment.

In a statement released this afternoon, the power utility said: “Unfortunately, the demand for replacement equipment is exceeding our current stock and supplier capacity. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes our customers and urge them to be patient as we explore alternative solutions to restore power while a new transformer is procured.”

City Power estimates that power will be restored to the affected areas by Thursday. They will continue to provide updates as their efforts to resolve the matter progress.

Meanwhile,City Power has issued a notice to residents that there may be disruptions to electricity supply d due to the severe weather, such as heavy rain & thunderstorms.

In the event of a power outage, residents are advised to:

– Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for lighting instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.

– Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain the temperature. Unplug sensitive electronic devices to prevent damage from power surges when the electricity is restored.
