A family in Lenasia South is appealing for community support after a devastating house fire on Friday, 30 May, destroyed nearly all their belongings, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

The fire, which broke out at 1525 Parrot Crescent in Ext 1, was reportedly caused by a wiring problem, according to the fire brigade. It quickly engulfed the home, gutting the ceilings, walls, wooden window frames, and all interior furnishings.

Chantal de Jongh, who lives in the house with her 3 daughters and 4-year-old granddaughter, says the family has been left reeling.

She told Globe Post: “We lost everything — our beds, bedding, clothes, shoes, even our toiletries. The electrical wiring is completely gone. It’s hard to know where to even start”

Chantal, who is currently unemployed, suffered smoke inhalation during the fire, and her children have developed chest problems due to smoke exposure. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and her granddaughter is currently being cared for by her paternal grandparents.

The family of five is in urgent need of support to help them rebuild. They are appealing for:

  • Paint, wood, and carpenters to help repair the interior
  • Ceilings and two beds
  • An electrician to restore wiring
  • Clothing and shoes for the family
  • Support with school uniform and stationery for a 14-year-old learner in Grade 8 at Southview High School

This tragedy has left the family without even the most basic necessities, and Chantal is calling on anyone who can assist, whether through donations or services, to come forward.

If you are able to help or would like to get in touch with the family, please contact Chantal de Jongh on o63 267 1279 or visit 1525 Parrot Crescent, Lenasia South Ext 1.
