On Saturday, 15 April, Umusa Community Projects in partnership with Rise Mzansi and Joy4Africa conducted a workshop for the youth in Lenasia South and surroundings.

“The day began with the youth cleaning up the neighbouring streets which taught them the valuable lesson of preparing for a new beginning. By removing the litter from our streets, we symbolically eradicate poverty from our community. Youth were reminded of their values and innovative methods were used to capture their attention. We were impressed by the commitment of Rise Mzansi to serve the community, especially when it comes to supporting the youth, professionals such as Darryl and Angelo from Joy4Africa delivered exceptional speeches,” Umusa Projects’ Ps Nomsa Tshabalala told GLOBE POST.

The participants were then taught how to make an Amandla Elanga bottle light roof connector which involves converting sunlight into light through a 2-litre plastic bottle filled with water and bleach and can produce up to 50 watts of light equivalent to sunlight.

The youth went to Phumlamqashi to experiment and demonstrate how the technique works in shacks.

“Residents were impressed by the workshop’s impact and the fact that they could save money – not having to buy candles – even during the day. Our young people at Umusa are enthusiastic about this new skill, which they can use to start their own business and help people in informal settlements with low-cost, permanent bottle lights. We are grateful to Rise Mzansi and Joy4Africa for bringing such talented and skilled individuals to serve our community in this manner, especially in bringing hope to our troubled youth. We say Bravo to Rise Mzansi and Joy4Africa for their dedication and service to our community,” Tshabalala added.
