Lenaisia’s Khalil Mohamed, a Senior Service Engineer at Zutek Services CC and dedicated community leader, has been awarded the prestigious People’s Choice Award as part of the 2024 Integrity Icons Civic Leader Awards organized by Accountability Lab South Africa to celebrates individuals who exhibit outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication to their communities.

Mohamed’s recognition comes on the back of his long-standing commitment to social responsibility and community safety in Lenasia, where he has played a key role in several initiatives serving as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Lenasia Community Policing Forum (CPF) from 2019 until recently.

He is currently an Executive Board Member of the Civilian Crime Intelligence Network (CCIN) and leads the N12 Safety Campaign, which focuses on promoting road safety in the area.

Reflecting on his latest recognition, Mohamed expressed deep gratitude. He told Globe Post: “I’m truly honoured to have been chosen as the People’s Choice Award winner. It’s humbling to know that the community values the work I’ve done. This recognition isn’t just mine; it belongs to everyone who supported me.”

Speaking about the significance of the Integruty Icon Award, Mohamed emphasized its role in fostering a sense of responsibility among the broader public.

He added: “This award shines a spotlight on the importance of integrity and active leadership in our community. It inspires others to get involved, to lead with honesty and to become advocates for positive change”

Selected as one of the top five recipients of the 2024 Integrity Icons Awards, Mohamed was one of just two Civic Leaders chosen from 425 public nominations. The nomination process was driven by public input and the winners were selected after a month-long voting period where members of the public could cast their votes for their favorite Integrity Icon or Civic Leader.

By recognizing the efforts of leaders like Khalil Mohamed, the Integrity Icons initiative encourages transparency, accountability and active citizenship. Mohamed believes that such recognition plays a vital role in motivating others to take action in their communities.

In his message to the community, Mohamed expressed his appreciation for the support he’s received throughout his journey. “This award is a testament to the power of community and what we can achieve when we come together. I encourage everyone to continue being active citizens, stay engaged, and work towards building a future we can all be proud of. Let’s keep moving forward together, with integrity and purpose,” he remarked.

Mohamed’s journey as a community leader is marked by numerous accolades and roles. Notably, he has been a five-time recipient of the Nelson Mandela Community Leadership Award between 2015 and 2019, a testament to his enduring impact on local governance and civic engagement.
