City Power Johannesburg has announced a revised load reduction schedule effective from Monday, 15 July 2024. This new schedule aims to improve operating efficiency and prevent overloading of the electrical grid.
The updated load reduction will occur in the following time slots:
Morning Schedule:
- 04:30 – 07:00
- 06:30 – 09:00
- 08:30 – 11:00
Afternoon Schedule:
- 16:30 – 19:00
- 18:30 – 21:00
- 20:30 – 23:00
These changes mark a shift from the current schedule, which runs from 04:00 – 10:30 in the mornings and 16:00 – 22:30 in the evenings. The revised schedule includes additional areas such as Pennyville, Noordgesig, and Lufhereng. More areas may be added if electricity consumption exceeds capacity.
City Power implements load reduction during peak hours in regions with high electricity usage to prevent overloading, which could lead to equipment failure and grid collapse. The utility emphasizes the importance of this measure for protecting infrastructure and ensuring the safety of personnel.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena urged customers to reduce their electricity consumption and avoid illegal connections and meter bypasses. “We continue our plea to customers to use alternative methods to keep warm during this cold weather,” Mangena said.
