The Democratic Alliance (DA) has taken an early lead in Johannesburg’s Ward 9, overtaking the African National Congress (ANC) as further votes are counted in South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections.
According to the latest Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) dashboard figures, the DA has secured 287 votes, representing 29.62% of valid votes counted in the ward.
Al Jama-ah is following closely with 265 votes, or 27.35%, placing it just 22 votes behind the DA in an increasingly competitive contest.
The ANC, which held the lead in an earlier count, has slipped to third place with 180 votes, representing 18.58%.
The latest figures mark a significant shift from the initial results, which showed the ANC ahead of the DA and Al Jama-ah.
Rise Mzansi occupies fourth position with 4.54%, followed by ActionSA with 4.13% and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on 3.41%.
Build One South Africa (BOSA) has secured 2.99%, while the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) stands at 1.65%.
Other parties receiving votes include the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) with 1.24%, the South African Communist Party (SACP) with 0.72% and the Freedom Front Plus with 0.52%.
The figures indicate a closely contested race between the DA and Al Jama-ah, with the ANC trailing the leading party by 107 votes.
However, the IEC dashboard shows Ward 9 is only 12% complete, meaning most of the counting remains outstanding and the standings could change substantially.
The ward, which includes parts of the greater Lenasia area, is among several Johannesburg constituencies being closely monitored as political parties compete for representation in the City of Johannesburg Council.
The developing results also highlight the importance of individual voting districts, where different patterns of party support can significantly alter the overall ward standings as additional results are captured.
For residents, the outcome will determine who represents Ward 9 in council and raises community concerns involving water supply, electricity, roads, sanitation, housing and municipal accountability.
Ward councillors serve as an important link between residents and local government, making the election outcome particularly significant for communities seeking improved service delivery and greater responsiveness from municipal authorities.
Despite the DA’s current advantage, no party has secured victory in Ward 9. The final outcome will depend on the completion and verification of outstanding votes.
The IEC dashboard also shows that no council control or ward seat has been allocated at this stage.
As counting progresses, attention will remain on whether the DA can maintain its narrow lead over Al Jama-ah or whether the ANC and other contenders gain ground.
Globe Post will continue monitoring Johannesburg’s southern wards, providing verified updates as the IEC releases further results.
