The City of Johannesburg has handed over keys to 48 refurbished housing units to qualifying beneficiaries at Dube Hostel, following a 15-year wait.
The City’s Human Settlements MMC Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, says the project faced several challenges, including vandalism and inadequate bulk infrastructure, which delayed the allocation of the units.
The allocation forms part of the City’s ongoing efforts to improve living conditions in Johannesburg’s hostels and ensure that qualifying beneficiaries have access to suitable accommodation.

The initiative also seeks to address housing needs, improve service delivery and support the revitalisation of hostel communities across the City.
MMC Mabaso says the City had to appoint Johannesburg Water to address bulk infrastructure challenges before the units could be connected.
Mabaso, who grew up at Dube Hostel and lived there for more than 16 years, says the handover marks a historic moment for both the beneficiaries and the City.
A total of 291 units are earmarked for refurbishment at the hostel.
He says installation of the required infrastructure is approximately 95% complete, with the next phase focusing on refurbishing additional units to allow for further connections and allocations.
