Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the arrest of a pastor allegedly linked to the death of a four-month-old baby, describing the development as an important step towards ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

In a media statement issued on Sunday, 11 October 2026, the Gauteng Provincial Government expressed its condolences to the child’s family, acknowledging the profound pain caused by the loss of an infant.

Lesufi said the arrest was a significant development in bringing the matter before the courts, adding that the criminal justice process must be allowed to take its course.

“The arrest is an important step in ensuring that this tragic matter is brought before the courts and that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law,” the Premier said.

He stressed that no individual’s title or position in society should place them above the law, highlighting the responsibility of religious leaders to protect, guide and serve their communities, particularly vulnerable people.

The provincial government has called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that the investigation is conducted diligently and that all relevant evidence is presented before the courts.

It has also urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and circulating unverified information while the legal process unfolds.

The case has renewed attention on the responsibility of adults and institutions entrusted with the care and protection of children. The provincial government reiterated that safeguarding children requires a collective effort involving families, communities, religious institutions, government and civil society.

Lesufi emphasised that every child deserves to grow up in an environment where their safety, dignity and fundamental rights are respected and protected.

The pastor remains accused, and the allegations must be tested through the legal process. Further details about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death were not provided in the provincial government’s statement.
