Pikitup says it is working to restore normal waste collection services across Johannesburg after reduced operational capacity caused delays in scheduled refuse collection in several areas.

The City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity apologised to residents affected by the disruptions, saying some scheduled collections had been delayed, leaving waste uncollected in certain areas.

Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe said operations had since stabilised and resources were being prioritised to clear the backlog.

“Pikitup has since stabilised its operations and is working to clear the backlog as quickly as possible. Available resources are being prioritised and deployed to affected areas, with teams focusing on outstanding collection rounds and restoring normal collection schedules,” Selepe said.

Residents who are able to do so have been encouraged to use Pikitup’s Integrated Waste Management Facilities to dispose of excess household waste while collection services are being restored.

Selepe acknowledged the frustration and inconvenience experienced by residents as a result of the delays.

“Pikitup understands the frustration and inconvenience caused by the delayed collections and sincerely appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation. Teams remain focused on clearing the backlog and returning services to normal as soon as possible,” he said.

Pikitup has not provided a specific timeframe for when the entire backlog will be cleared, but says available resources are being deployed to affected areas while outstanding collection rounds are prioritised.

The entity has urged residents to remain patient as teams work to return waste collection services to their normal schedules.
