More than 38,000 Johannesburg pensioners will continue receiving property rates relief after the City extended existing rebates until June 2027. The City provided about R329.8 million in property rates rebates to 38,308 pensioner beneficiaries during the 2025/26 financial year, highlighting the scale of support available to older homeowners.
Existing beneficiaries do not need to submit new applications for the coming financial year, provided they continue to meet the applicable requirements. The relief forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s Pensioners Legacy and Relief Campaign, which was launched in recognition of International Day of Older Persons. The campaign is aimed at helping older residents access municipal support while also addressing issues that can affect families managing properties after the death of a pensioner.
Pensioners who have recently turned 60 or who have never applied for the rebate will still need to submit an application. Residents aged between 60 and 69 may qualify for a full or partial rebate depending on their household income and the value of their property. Pensioners aged 70 and older may qualify for a full rebate on qualifying properties valued at up to R2 million.
The City requires applicants to be registered property owners who occupy the property as their primary residence. The municipality has encouraged eligible pensioners and their families to make use of the available support and ensure that municipal ownership and account information remains up to date.
