Police have confirmed an ATM bombing at Shoprite in Ennerdale following a series of loud explosions reported at the shopping centre on Tuesday morning, 22 September. Speaking to Globe Post, Ennerdale SAPS Colonel Romeo Vassen confirmed that an ATM was targeted during the incident. Police responded to the scene after receiving reports of the explosions, but the suspects had already fled by the time officers arrived.
According to Vassen, police have reviewed CCTV footage from the scene. While the footage is not clear, it reportedly shows approximately 20 male suspects with their faces covered. The group is believed to have used several vehicles during the incident. Shots were also fired at security guards during the robbery. Police confirmed that no security guards were injured. The amount of money taken during the bombing has not yet been disclosed.
Vassen said the suspects fled from the scene in the direction of Golden Highway Provincial Road. Police are continuing with investigations to establish the identities of those involved and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The incident caused concern among residents following the sound of multiple explosions in the area, with some describing the noise as resembling a war zone.
