With spring upon us and the festive season around the corner, did you know that the Department of Home Affairs allows people to start the process of applying for travelling documents and smart IDs through its eHomeAffairs online platform before visiting a service point to complete the required steps?

In order to access the services, applicants must first create a profile using their personal details. They can then choose the service they need, complete the application, provide the required information and upload supporting documents where required. Payment can also be made online.

After submitting the application, they must visit a Home Affairs office or participating bank branch to complete the biometric part of the process. For Smart ID applications, this includes having a photograph, fingerprints and signature verified. Passport applicants will also need to complete the required biometric process.

For Globe Post readers, nearby bank options for Smart ID services include Capitec at Lenasia Square, Eyethu Mall Orange Farm and Trade Route Mall including Standard Bank Lenasia offer these services. Residents should check with the branch beforehand to confirm which services are available and whether an appointment is needed.

Applicants should have their required documents ready and check that all information provided online is correct before submitting the application. The eHomeAffairs system can be used for new applications. Residents applying for a passport should check the specific requirements for their application before starting the process.
