Residents of Thembelihle Informal Settlement were given an opportunity to seek answers about housing allocations and verify their details with government officials during a Beneficiary Education and Allocation Verification Day hosted by the City of Johannesburg.

The engagement was led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, and focused on helping residents better understand how the housing allocation process works. The programme explained how beneficiaries are identified, verified and allocated to approved housing projects, while also giving residents an opportunity to raise concerns about their own housing applications and beneficiary status.

Mabaso said direct engagement with communities was essential to ensuring that residents receive reliable information and understand the processes they are expected to follow.

“Residents deserve to understand how the allocation process works and to know where they stand. Our responsibility is to provide clear information, verify beneficiary details and ensure that communities are not left dependent on rumours or misleading information,” Mabaso said.

Officials from the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Provincial Department of Human Settlements were also available during the programme to assist residents with queries and verify their information against government records and approved housing projects. The exercise allowed community members to establish whether their details appeared on beneficiary records and whether the information captured by government was accurate and aligned with the relevant housing projects.

The engagement also provided a platform for residents to speak directly to Mabaso and housing officials about the challenges they have experienced. Concerns relating to the allocation process, beneficiary verification and the procedures residents should follow were addressed, with officials providing guidance on where and how residents can obtain accurate information about their applications.

Housing remains a major concern for many communities living in informal settlements, where residents continue to seek secure and formal housing opportunities. The verification programme was therefore aimed not only at providing information, but also at improving communication between government and residents who may have questions about their place in the housing allocation process.

Residents were encouraged to make use of official government channels when seeking information about housing allocations and to be cautious of individuals who claim they can influence or guarantee housing allocations. The City and the provincial department stressed the importance of relying on verified information and ensuring that beneficiary details remain accurate.

The engagement forms part of efforts to bring housing-related information closer to communities while addressing uncertainty around allocations. For residents of Thembelihle, the programme provided an opportunity to raise concerns directly, verify their information and gain a clearer understanding of the processes involved in accessing approved housing opportunities.
