Motorists travelling through Glen Austin, Midrand, are being urged to avoid the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road (R101) following a reported plane crash and a secondary motor vehicle accident on Tuesday afternoon, 8 September.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Emergency Management Services (EMS) were on scene responding to the reported plane crash when a second accident involving a motor vehicle occurred at the same location. The incidents have resulted in significant traffic disruptions, with heavy delays reported along the affected routes.
JMPD officers were being deployed to the area to assist with traffic control, scene management and the implementation of diversions, while emergency personnel continued responding to the incident. Authorities had not confirmed the number of injuries or casualties at the time of the advisory, with further details expected once the information has been verified.
Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling in the area and to avoid the affected intersection where possible. Drivers are also being asked not to obstruct access routes, as emergency response vehicles require clear access to the scene.
As alternative routes, motorists travelling on the N1 Highway can use the Allandale Road or Olifantsfontein Road (M38) interchanges to bypass the New Road and R101 intersection. Drivers can also use Olifantsfontein Road northbound or Allandale Road southbound to avoid the Glen Austin area.
For local traffic in Midrand, motorists are advised to consider Lever Road or Dale Road as alternative routes and avoid approaching the affected intersection until authorities have cleared the scene.
The JMPD said motorists should continue to monitor developments and exercise patience as emergency and traffic management operations remain underway.
