The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have continued their joint efforts to combat illicit mining and other criminal activities in Gauteng, with a recent Operation PROSPER deployment leading to the discovery of suspected drugs in Johannesburg.

On 19 August 2026, members of the SANDF’s Solomon Mahlangu Regiment Bravo and Charlie Companies, deployed under Joint Tactical Headquarters Gauteng, joined forces with SAPS to conduct a coordinated operation in central Johannesburg. The operation focused on illicit mining and anti-criminality activities, with security personnel carrying out foot patrols and searches in identified areas as part of efforts to detect and disrupt unlawful activities.

While conducting patrols and searches around B-Section in Wittenburg Street, members spotted an abandoned black plastic bag. The bag was inspected and found to contain 20 ziplock bags filled with a substance suspected to be crystal methamphetamine. No arrest was reported in connection with the discovery, as the bag had apparently been abandoned before it was found by members participating in the operation.

The suspected drugs were confiscated and subsequently booked in at Eldorado Park Police Station, where the matter could be subjected to further investigation and the necessary police processes. The discovery formed part of the broader operation aimed at strengthening law-enforcement visibility and addressing criminal activities affecting communities across Gauteng.

Operation PROSPER brings together members of the SANDF and SAPS in coordinated deployments aimed at supporting safety and security efforts, including operations targeting illicit mining and associated criminality. Joint patrols and searches allow security personnel to maintain a visible presence while identifying suspected illegal activities and items that may be linked to crime.

The SANDF and SAPS have reiterated their commitment to working together to ensure that peace and security prevail within communities. Through continued cooperation and coordinated operations, the security forces aim to contribute towards safer communities while supporting broader efforts to combat crime in Gauteng.
