The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested 87 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a week-long crackdown across the City of Johannesburg. The arrests were made during coordinated law enforcement operations conducted by various regional and specialised JMPD units from Monday, 29 June 2026, to Sunday, 5 July.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said: “The JMPD remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring road safety and curbing the menace of Driving Under the Influence of alcohol across the City of Johannesburg.”
He added that drunk driving remains one of the leading contributors to fatal road accidents in the city. Fihla said the number of arrests shows that targeted enforcement operations are yielding results: “The high number of arrests by our officers underscores the effectiveness of targeted enforcement strategies.”
The department warned motorists that driving under the influence is a serious criminal offence and that officers will continue to maintain a visible presence on major routes.
Fihla urged motorists who plan to consume alcohol to make responsible transport arrangements. “If you drink and drive, you will be arrested,” he said.
