In a swift and decisive action, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit arrested a 22-year-old male suspect for hijacking and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Finetown on the evening of Wednesday, 6 September.

Vigilant officers from the JMPD K9 Unit were on their routine patrol when they stumbled upon a hijacking in progress in the vicinity of Zakariyya Park. Startled by the sight, the officers witnessed the victim being forcibly pushed into the back of a courier bakkie by the assailants.

With precision and determination, the officers immediately activated their patrol vehicle’s blue lights and sirens, embarking on a high-speed pursuit of the hijacked vehicle. The chase intensified as it traversed from Zakariyya Park to Finetown.

As the pursuit unfolded, the daring suspects made a desperate move, leaping out of the moving hijacked vehicle. In a dramatic turn of events, two of the three suspects managed to evade capture, fleeing on foot. However, the law enforcement officers successfully apprehended one male suspect.

During a subsequent search of the arrested suspect, a startling discovery was made—an unlicensed firearm was found in his possession, further intensifying the gravity of the situation.

The detained suspect is now in custody at Lenasia South South African Police Service (SAPS) pending further legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the hijacked vehicle, a courier bakkie, has been securely impounded at the SAPS Lenasia pound as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The swift response and unwavering commitment of the JMPD K9 Unit have demonstrated once again their dedication to maintaining law and order in the city. This incident serves as a stark reminder that criminal activities will not be tolerated, and law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure the safety of the public.
