A security guard manning the Lenasia South’s Liverpool bloc top gate was almost killed in the early hours of this morning, after a speeding hijacking suspect crashed into the closed gates in an attempt to escape tracking teams. The white VW Polo Vivo had been stolen in Vanderbijlpark earlier today.
According to Emprior Security owner, Ridwaan Minty, Tracker teams followed the vehicle into Lenasia South, where the driver attempted to escape. “The suspect turned into the Liverpool block off Lancaster Street. When he saw the boom gate, he jumped out of the moving car and fled on foot, leaving the vehicle to crash into the locked gate,” Minty explained.
The sound of a helicopter hovering over the neighbourhood, as a tracking company pursued a stolen vehicle startled and traumatised residents. One resident recalled: “The helicopter was hovering right above our house – it was a terrifying experience.”
The suspect managed to get away, but the Polo was recovered and later booked in at SAPS 13. This incident has once again raised concerns among residents, as stolen vehicles from outside areas are increasingly being found in the area. Community members are calling for heightened policing and better safety measures to curb the trend.
Residents of Liverpool block are advised to use the bottom gate until further notice.
