In response to the heartbreaking rise in youth-related crimes in Ennerdale, community members gathered at the Civic Centre on 2 August for a powerful and emotional event Young Lives Matter, spearheaded by Mrs Bold finalist and passionate youth advocate Natasha de Matos.

The event, attended by scores of residents, was more than just a gathering – it was a call to action. At the heart of the programme was a moving awards ceremony that honoured phenomenal women in the community with certificates for their unwavering dedication to uplift others. From mentors to caregivers, these women were celebrated as the quiet forces driving hope and resilience in Ennerdale.

“This was about recognising the warriors among us the women who carry this community with love, strength, and grace,” said De Matos.

The event also paid tribute to the many young lives lost to crime, violence and social issues. Heart-wrenching testimonies, stirring performances and speeches from local youth turned the space into one of healing, reflection and unity.

Young Lives Matter isn’t just an event – it’s a growing movement. Founded by De Matos and supported by local changemaker Vaughn Lucas, the initiative tackles issues like bullying, trauma and school violence, while empowering children to speak up and seek help.

“We’re creating safe spaces where learners feel seen, heard and supported. This is how we start breaking generational cycles,” she added.

As plans take shape to expand the movement into schools and surrounding communities, Young Lives Matter is fast becoming a symbol of hope and a reminder that together, Ennerdale can rise.
