Johannesburg residents can enjoy free access to the city’s public parks this Heritage Day, with JCPZ encouraging families and friends to spend the public holiday outdoors.Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is inviting Joburgers to wear South African colours or cultural regalia while enjoying picnics, walks, hikes and other outdoor activities on Thursday, 24 September.
Popular spaces across the city include Thokoza Park, Dorothy Nyembe Park, Klipriversberg Nature Reserve, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Zoo Lake, The Wilds, Melville Koppies, Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Florida Lake and Ivory Park Regional Park. Residents planning a Heritage Day braai are reminded that fires are only permitted in designated areas. Ash must be placed in concrete bins and fires must be fully extinguished before leaving.
JCPZ is also urging parents and guardians to keep children within sight, especially around water, playgrounds and busy areas. Visitors are encouraged to leave glass bottles and unnecessary valuables at home, dispose of waste responsibly and respect other park users. JCPZ Park Rangers and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will conduct random patrols throughout the holiday. Residents can report by-law transgressions or non-compliance to the JMPD on 011 375 5911.
JCPZ Managing Director Thanduxolo Mendrew said the city’s parks are shared spaces where communities can celebrate their diversity. “This Heritage Day, we invite every Joburger to celebrate our diversity responsibly, protect our public spaces and help us build a city where everyone can enjoy the outdoors safely and with dignity,” said Mendrew. JCPZ is encouraging residents to gather with loved ones, celebrate South Africa’s heritage and help keep Johannesburg’s public spaces clean and safe.
