Lenasia South Ext 1 residents gathered at Hampton Park on Friday, 18 September, to plant trees in memory of loved ones and strengthen their commitment to keeping the community space green and well maintained, the tree-planting initiative at Hampton Park on Friday, 18 September, was a reminder of how collective community efforts can turn neglected spaces into places residents can take pride in.

Farhana Gaffar, who led the initiative, said the community had improved significantly over the years. She highlighted Hampton Park’s transformation from a dumping site in 2019 into a green and welcoming public space through the efforts of residents, with support from City Parks. Gaffar said the changes were evidence of what could be achieved when residents worked together to improve their surroundings. She also pointed to the installation of security boom gates at the entrances of the community as another significant improvement that has contributed to making the area safer and more organised.

The Tree Planting Day saw 50 trees supplied by City Parks planted at Hampton Park, with Joburg City Parks also assisting by preparing the holes for planting. For some residents, the day carried a personal meaning as they dedicated trees to loved ones who had passed away. The trees will serve as lasting memorials while also contributing to the continued greening of the park.Residents said maintaining the progress made over the years requires ongoing participation from the community. They encouraged fellow residents to keep public spaces clean, protect the park from being misused and take part in initiatives aimed at improving the area. The transformation of Hampton Park continues to stand as an example of how community involvement, combined with support from local authorities, can bring meaningful change to a neighbourhood.
